Most people are familiar with New York City’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Ball Drop. But did you know that there are hundreds of different New Year’s “drops” across the US? From a giant music note to a jumbo marshmallow Peep, here are 10 of the wackiest, most unique New Year’s drops in the US.
- Nashville’s Big Bash Music Note Drop
This music note is the signature New Year’s Eve tradition in Nashville and consists of a giant, red, lit up music note descending from a 140 foot tower to celebrate and ring in the new year.
- The Sartori Big Cheese Drop in Plymouth, Wisconsin
This New Year’s Eve drop consists of an approximately 400 pound wedge of Sartori’s BellaVitano Gold Cheese being lowered to celebrate the joy of the new year, and of course, cheese! Attendees of the event also have the chance to sample the very wedge that drops, along with various other types of cheeses throughout the night.
- Idaho’s Potato Drop
Commonly known as the “GlowTato”, the giant, 12 foot tall, 15,000 pound illuminated potato is lowered in Boise, Idaho to encourage a spud-tastic new year.
- Atlanta, Georgia’s Countdown Over ATL Peach Drop
A tradition since 1989 that has come to a halt for the first time this New Year. It was reported that the Peach Drop got too “sporatic”, so it was replaced with a drone and firework show this year. Will the 800 pound peach make a comeback?
- Temecula, California’s New Year’s Eve Grape Drop
This countdown includes a 150 pound bunch of giant purple grapes, along with over 7,000 lights which are lowered twice: once at 9 P.M. to celebrate with the east coast, and then again at midnight.
- The Folly Beach Flip Flop Drop in South Carolina
Giant 8-10 foot illuminated flip flops descend in Folly Beach to celebrate a beachy good new year.
- MoonPie Over Mobile, Alabama
This drop is unique as it includes a giant, 600 pound mechanical MoonPie that is lowered to welcome the new year, and then celebrated further as the crowd cuts into a large 55 pound edible MoonPie to enjoy together.
- CherryT Ball Drop in Traverse City, Michigan
CherryT may look like a typo, but is actually the name of this drop as it is celebrated with a 600 pound, illuminated cherry that drops to benefit local charities through the cherry themed festivities throughout the night.
- Indiana’s Pierogi Drop
This drop not only descends, but dunks a giant 10 foot, illuminated pierogi into a boiling cauldron as a symbol that celebrates the city’s rich Eastern European heritage, and fosters community spirit.
- Various Pennsylvania New Year’s Eve Drops
When exploring the New Year’s Eve drops in Pennsylvania, it’s impossible to pick just one! They conduct numerous different drops across the state, which include but are not limited to:
- Bethlehem’s PEEPFEST, where a 400 pound lit up Marshmallow Peep Chick drops
- Lebanon’s NYE Bologna Drop, where 16 foot cased bologna is lowered
- Kennett Square’s Midnight in the Square, where a 700 pound steel mushroom is lowered and celebrated
- Harrisburg’s Strawberry Drop, where an 8 foot, illuminated strawberry descends
- The Lower Allen Township Pants Drop, where the town’s signature 5 foot tall pair of yellow pants are dropped

- Mechanicsburg’s Wrench Drop, where a 10 foot, steel, 85 pound wrench is dropped to celebrate and honor local mechanics

- Lancaster’s Red Rose Drop, where a 60-100 pound rose descends at midnight
- The Carlisle “Hotchee Dog” NYE Drop, where a 6 foot chili cheese dog is dropped
There are also even a few “raises” in Pennsylvania, like the Hershey’s Kiss Raise where a Hershey’s kiss is lifted above the crowd at midnight, and the Pottsville Yuengling Beer Bottle Raise where the Yuengling beer bottle ascends to the top of a flagpole to ring in the new year.
It’s crazy to believe that all of these New Year’s Eve drops exist, as well as many more. Next year, be sure to watch more than just the typical New York City’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Ball Drop, and check out one of these unique, wacky drops and celebrations to ring in the new year!
