Recently Woodford County high school added a sport that has shockingly become more, and more popular. Esports is a new sport that doesn’t involve sports equipment. Esports teams compete in gaming tournaments against other schools in various video games. WCHS just made it a sport at the school!
Esports at WCHS restarted back in February 2025. The team started with only 2 players. During fall 2025 Mrs. Fitts joined the team as a co-coach Mrs. Fitts really got the word out about Esports and grew the team from 2 players to 12-14 players. The Jackets after finishing their first season ranked 39th in the state in Mario kart and 84th in super smash brothers. I got the chance to talk to Mrs Fitts about how she feels about the team from a coaching point of view “I like to figure out what kids are good at and help them grow. I kept seeing Mark and 2 of my students playing video games after school and I knew the group could be bigger.” Coach Fitts said. I also got to talk to current player on the Esports team freshman Elias Manns about his views of the Esports team being a player on the team “Its like any other sport even though its online and we don’t have to work as hard i see the members of Esports as family and friends, I was the first person to join the Esports team as an 8th grader even though we didn’t start playing in tournaments until my freshman year of high school. Overall Esports is a fun sport to play in your free time.” Said Manns.
The team is planning on playing in multiple tournaments next season. The head coach Mark Boian talks very highly of the team and players. The team is very excited for the upcoming season of Esports!
