The WCHS boys golf team teed it up at the Regional Tournament at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond, following their strong end to the regular season. The Jackets entered regions coming off of a huge win in the conference tournament, which gave them a lot of momentum to perform well.
Fighting the rain and wind, five jackets competed and all had strong rounds. Bradford Lacefield tied for 1st place shooting 2 under par (70), eventually losing in a playoff. Despite the playoff loss, Lacefield’s finish was good enough to qualify for the state tournament’s first round. Philip Brown also had a very good day firing a 77, one of his best scores of the season. This placed him in a playoff to make it to state, which he also eventually lost. Other scores included Peter Marra 84, Landon Heim 87, and Brayden Burton 87. Although the boys didn’t qualify for state as a team, they still had a very strong day shooting 30 over as a team which placed them in 7th place out of a 19-team field.
Lacefield’s next tournament would be the first round of the state tournament, held at Eagle’s Nest Country Club in Somerset. Needing a top 15 finish to qualify for the state finals, Lacefiled shot an impressive 72. His 72 placed him in 5th, advancing him to the season’s final tournament in Bowling Green.
Coming off two impressive outings at regions, and the first round of state, Lacefield had high hopes for the state finals. The state finals were held at Bowling Green Country Club. In his opening round, Bradford shot a 77 (5 over) and needed a stellar second round to fight back into contention. Lacefield had a great second round shooting a 73 (1 over), including a 34 (2 under) on the back nine. This finish slotted him in a tie for 16th place in a field of 90 golfers to finish the state Finals.
Following his finish at state, Lacefield made a very big announcement. Junior Bradford Lacefield committed to play golf at the University of Kentucky.
While the Jackets may have come up short of their hopes of qualifying for state as a team, they still cemented themselves as one of the best golf teams in WCHS history with their wins in the conference regular season and tournament. With many graduating golfers, Lacefield and the rest of the 2025 WCHS boys golf team will have big shoes to fill next season.
