Taking the Fast Track

The indoor track team had their first meet at the University of Kentucky.

Colin Charles (12) leads his heat in the boys 1 mile race. Charles finished his race with a time of 5:14.6. This was Charles’s first indoor track meet and he felt pretty good for his first race. “The indoor air is a lot different than outdoors; it hit me pretty hard,” said Charles. “I’m hoping this’ll be a good springboard for the rest of the outdoor season.”

The Nutter Field House was packed with people on Saturday, February 1st for the High School Wildcat Classic. This was the first indoor track meet that WCHS has participated in this year. 12 students from Woodford County participated in this event including Ana Ruvalcaba (11), Calvin Rowe (9), Jerry Creech (10), Colin Charles (12), Raegan Gilbert (12), Cassidy Gilbert (10), Sawyer Ford (9), Maggie McSorley (10), Kamryn Hall (10), Adriana Santos (10), Callie Gormley (11), and Allison Ferguson (12). Not pictured: Ana Ruvalcaba ran in the girls 60-meter dash and finished with a time of 9.01. Sawyer Ford ran in the boys 400-meter dash and finished with a time of 58.75 and he ran in the boys 800-meter run and finished with a time of 2:23.98. Callie Gormley participated in the girl’s long jump event and finished with a distance of 14 ft and 9.25 in.

  • Cassidy Gilbert (10) races in the girls 800 meter run. Gilbert finished with a time of 2:40.39. This was Gilbert’s third indoor track meet, the first of this season. Gilbert was initially nervous because she felt the energy in the air, but she said, “After the gun went off, all of my anxiousness went away and I immediately zoned in on the race.” Gilbert said it was an intense meet, but she is grateful for the experience. “It allows me to see how I compare to other runners, and to know what the rest of the season will be like.”

  • Raegan Gilbert races in the girls 400 meter dash. Gilbert finished with a time of 1:11.95. This was Gilbert’s first track meet. Gilbert said she wished she had done better, but she hadn’t trained for track before so now she knows how she can improve. “I’m so proud of my teammates that had the courage to show up and get a feel for where they were at with their times,” said Gilbert.

  • Maggie McSorley (10) races in the girls 800 meter run. McSorley finished with a time of 2:57.48. This was McSorley’s first indoor track meet and she said she was very nervous as it was her first meet of the track season. “I am excited to continue doing the 800,” said McSorley.

  • Calvin Rowe (9) prepares to begin the 60 meter dash. He finished his race with a time of 8.26 seconds. This was Rowe’s first track meet. “I have room to improve,” said Rowe. Rowe said he really enjoyed the environment of running against people from different schools and different teams.

  • Jerry Creech (10) prepares for the boys 60 meter dash. He finished his race with a time of 8:07 seconds. This was Creech’s first indoor track meet. Creech said, “I was nervous about my race but still confident in how I would do.”

  • Allison Ferguson (12) clears 11 feet on the Pole Vault event. This was the highest point she cleared at the meet, putting her in 2nd place. Ferguson has participated in indoor track meets since her sophmore year. “Starting off the year like this is a good indication of how the year is going to go,” said Ferguson. She said, “We all did our best and we all did pretty decent.”

  • Adriana Santos (10) prepares to throw for the Shot Put event. Santos threw 22 ft and 11 in. This was Santos’s first indoor meet. “I felt decent about how I was keeping my numbers pretty stable,” said Santos. She also said “You should come out and join track. It might seem scary at first, but it’s really fun.”

  • Kamryn Hall (10) prepares to throw in the Shot Put event. She threw 14 ft and 6 in. This was Hall’s first track meet. She said she enjoyed it, but still has room to practice and grow. Hall described the meet in that “it was fun but also very nerve racking.”
