Have you ever read a fantasy novel? Watched movies and TV shows like The Witcher or Lord of the Rings? If so, maybe your interest lies in the creative expression that comes with the fantasy genre. Perhaps you’ve even wondered what it would be like to create one of these realms on your own. Well, look no further, dear traveler! The D&D club may be exactly what you’re searching for!
D&D, short for Dungeons and Dragons, is a common outlet for those who seek refuge in the world of the fantastical, using their creativity to build a universe from nothing. The game consists of several players, all of which come up with their own convoluted characters and backstories. Throughout the game, the designated “dungeon master” controls where the story goes and how exactly your characters fit together in the adventure. Campaigns can consist of anything from fantastical magic-filled worlds to futuristic dystopias, depending on the direction the dungeon master decides to go. The game is largely role-play based and requires a lot of imagination while playing. You may be encouraged to do silly voices or play out a conversation for the sake of the story.
The D&D club has been recently reinstated by senior Kate Rannenberg (President) and sophomore Valix Hardin (Vice President), both seeking a place to explore their creativity while also having fun.
“I like D&D because it gives you the chance to use your imagination without the constraints of any other storytelling format,” Rannenberg explains. “It’s wide open for you to make any decision to make the story your own.”
Among exploration of creativity, D&D also allows for people to grow closer over the course of the campaigns. Rannenberg touches on this with fondness as she looks back on the friends she made through the club. “We had a space to be authentic and silly while still contributing to something we were all excited about.”
That being said, if you’re looking for a place to let your creativity run free, I encourage you to check out the D&D club next school year!
