Last year, Lacrosse officially became a state-sanctioned sport. This means that all teams in Kentucky are recognized as a sport and will play in the same state-wide championship. Before this sanctioning, both Woodford County teams could only go as far as being CLL (Commonwealth Lacrosse League) champions. This year, our boys’ and girls’ teams are each looking to make their first-ever official Kentucky State Championship appearance. The boys won the CLL championship back in 2024, and the girls had a CLL finals appearance in 2021, but unfortunately lost in double overtime to Henry Clay.
Last year, the boys finished 14-3, making it all the way to the state semifinals before falling short to South Oldham, losing 15-11. While the boys lost some key players this year, they are still expected to be playoff contenders, with a preseason rank of 4th in the state. Some significant player losses included: Reid Sayre (Defense), Graham Hodge (Defense), Charlie Twehues (Face-Off/Midfielder), and Aidan McMahon (Attack). Despite the graduated players being former starters and key parts of the Jackets’ team, the returning players are more than enough to keep the team competitive in a title game. The key returning players are: Greyson Hodge (Attack, Junior), Cole Humston (Attack, Senior), Sam Hash (Defense, Senior), Parker Ishmael (Goalie, Senior), Andrew Spellman (Defense, Junior), Brayden Humston (Attack, Sophomore), and Behr Wheeler (Midfielder, Junior).
We sat down with a couple of seniors on the team, Ty Henry and Sam Hash, to see what they expect from the season. When asked whether he believes the team can be successful this year or not, Henry stated, “I really think we could take it all the way this year. Sure, we lost some guys, but so did everyone else, and what differentiates us from them is that we always bounce back.”
Sam Hash, a captain and a veteran player, has seen this team through its lowest lows and its highest highs. From a rough start in his freshman season, to an undefeated and CLL championship-winning season the next year.
