Yet again a new trend has been created by Gen-Z across various social media platforms. Heading into the New Year, Gen-Z has designed memes, satirical posts, and videos saying “2026 is the new 2016” on apps such as TikTok and Instagram. At first, this expression may seem funny or confusing; however, it shows a rather heartfelt message from Gen-Z.
Gen-Z is an age group born between 1997-2012 ranging from 13-28 years old in 2026. During the time of COVID-19, lasting roughly from 2020-2022, Gen-Z would have been late elementary to college-aged kids. Prior to this, the generation lived much of their childhood in the 2010s. COVID-19 caused a dramatic shift in the lives of Gen-Z, causing them to put years of their youth on pause, and has created stress for teenagers and kids. Gen-Z saying “2026 is the new 2016” represents a feeling of nostalgia and reminiscing on a simpler time of connected experiences, shared memories, and fun. For many, 2016 was a time in life that was filled with lightheartedness and was stress-free. Saying that 2026 is the new 2016 is a way to try to connect to a youthful time, before many of Gen-Z had years of their childhood cut off before becoming teenagers and adults.
Another reason that many are saying that 2026 is the new 2016 is that multiple trends from 2016 have slowly started to seep their way into social media in 2026. In 2016, many people wore things like bright colors and heavy makeup, and used trendy songs in posts on popular platforms such as Vine and Musically. Some have begun to bring parts of these 2016 trends back to social media when making TikToks. Popular music at the time consisted of lots of hip-hop, as that began to become heavily popular in the 2010’s. People have started using some of these songs from artists such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift in their 2016-related posts and memes.
Another popular artist at the time was Bruno Mars. His last solo album was “24k Magic,” which was released in 2016 and became heavily popular. Mars has yet to release another solo album or song since 2016. That was until January 9th, 2026. Mars released his newest solo song called “I Just Might.” The song quickly took social media by storm, and many fell in love with it. The song is a preview of his new album and tour called “The Romantic.”
Another reason some are saying 2026 is the new 2016 is because of politics. Similarities between 2026 politics and 2016 are common themes, such as immigration, economic concerns, and the President being Donald Trump. Trump was elected as president in 2016. Some are saying that now they are feeling the same uncertainty and problems that were felt in 2016. The common themes from 2016 politics have correlated because in that year, an issue was building a border between the United States and Mexico; now, in 2026, the issue of immigration revolves around ICE raids in cities across the U.S.
So, what do you think? Is 2026 the new 2016?
