As most sports fans know, 44 year old Philip Rivers has come out of retirement to play the rest of the year as the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts! Rivers retired in January 2021 after 17 seasons in the league. Rivers spent his final season with the Colts during the Covid-19 quarantine.
CNN Sports wrote a news article ‘Dadgummit, let’s freaking go’ – Philip Rivers returns to the NFL with the Colts. Rivers is coming back after not playing in the league for 5 years. The article started off with Rivers stating “I had not given any thought of playing again until 48 hours ago, to be honest with you.” Colts head coach Shane Steichen who worked with Rivers as an assistant head coach when they were with the Chargers gave Rivers a call wanting him to come out of retirement and play quarterback for the Colts. Rivers called Shane Steichen the next morning after sleeping on the offer saying “I need to get up there, need to get up there and throw, get in that building, start moving around.” After Rivers got a little practice and training in, The Colts general manager asked Rivers how he felt about the idea “He said, Dadgummit, lets freaking go.”
Another article talking about Rivers coming back to the NFL ESPN wrote called “Colts come up just short in Philip Rivers return to action.” They claimed Rivers had pulled off the unthinkable, making an audacious NFL comeback that never had been attempted. In Rivers’ first game back he silenced doubters when he helped the Colts take a 10 point lead in the first half. Rivers played the exact kind of game the colts were seeking, making smart decisions, changing stuff up during the game making the right decisions the colts needed.
Let’s talk to some of the staff members at Woodford County High School and see their thoughts on Philip Rivers coming out of retirement. Dennis Johnson the head coach and athletic director at Woodford county high school says “To be 44 years old and come back and be able to come into a game and not be able to play for almost 5 years is unbelievable, it’s remarkable what he’s doing.” Coach Johnson as a former NFL player can’t believe how he is coming back into the league after being gone for that long.
Ms. Hicks, an athletic director at WCHS, states “I was blown away that Philip Rivers came back into the league after not touching a football in 5 years and be able to operate a team like he did against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday evening.” Philip is going to be a weapon for the colts the rest of the year.
It’s best to say people are surprised by Philips decision to come back into the league. Philip is going to finish out the year with the colts and hopefully be able to come back another season with the colts next year. The best of luck to the 44 year old quarterback.
