Teens are facing a growth in mental health with anxiety, depression, stress and the feeling of being lonely within teens. Especially with academic pressure, social expectations, and worrying about their future.
Academic pressure ,social expectation and constant worry of their future play a huge roll in mental health. School is more than just learning its about grades, GPA, applications for collage and having that feeling of you need to always have to do more to be successful. Theres a pressure to fit in , look a certain way and act a certain way to be accepted by others which can be extremely stressful. One of the biggest influences on their mental health is social media phones and other technology. Teens struggle with disconnecting and taking a needed mental break. Social media websites like Instagram, snapchat, and tiktok creates a pressure to get likes, stay updated, and to maintain an online image. Teens’ self esteem is often lowered and their anxiety is increased.
As these issues grow within teens, schools are starting to see students struggle emotionally and socially. They often are afraid to ask for help or don’t know where to get help. Some schools don’t have enough resources to support everyone and their mental health needs go unnoticed. Which lead to major grade drops, trouble focusing, and begin to withdraw from their activities they once loved and distance themselves from friends. Schools can better support teens by increasing the access to talk to counselors, creating mental health programs, and offering safe spaces for students to talk. Which can make a big difference and help train teachers to see the signs and provide teens with the knowledge of how to recognize unrealistic, online content and help them use their electronics more wisely. By openly discussing mental health and providing strong support, schools can help teens feel understood and help guide them toward healthier habits.
