When you walk into WCHS in the morning, you see groups standing around chatting. Some are filled with laughter; some have joyful smiles; some have judgmental looks on their faces. But this is not how it has always been. Let’s reminisce on the times when we were years old and everyone was friends, walking in and giving hugs and high-fives to everyone no matter how they looked or who they were friends with. That does seem unrealistic now, but we can always strive to anchor ourselves with kindness. This was the reason for kindness week here at WCHS. It was a week full of fun dress up days and kindness challenges, with the overall goal to make this school a better place.
The dress up days!
For each day of kindness week there was a dress up day that corresponds to dress-up days. This was in order to get students eager about kindness week because students are passionate about dress up days. To start off the week, Monday was ¨Be the reason someone smiles¨ day, and staff encouraged students to wear yellow in order to ¨spread sunshine¨. This was a great way to show joy around the school. Tuesday was ¨Buzz with Kindness Day¨ where students twinned with a friend in order to unite the school. This brought friends together with beautiful memories. Wednesday was ¨High five for kindness day where students were told to wear their spirit in order to show our Yellow Jacket pride. Thursday was ¨Sting Out Bullying Day¨ students were told to wear mixed match clothes. This was one of my favorites because it was to celebrate our differences. Friday was ¨Yellow Jackets don’t scare, we spread kindness everywhere day,¨ and students were encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.
Challenges
Throughout kindness week there was also a task to complete each day. The tasks were used to encourage students to show appreciation towards each other during the week. On Monday they were encouraged to give three compliments to other students which was a great way to brighten someone’s day. Tuesday they were told to introduce themselves to someone new, and this was a great opportunity to make new friends. Wednesday students were challenged to give three people a high five, which was a fun way to encourage people. Thursday, a guest speaker came to speak with the students.Friday students were able to wear their costumes to school which allowed students to have a fun time! All and all, kindness week was a great way to show appreciation and love to other students.
