Week 6 of college football was one we will never forget. Starting at noon on Saturday, October 4th, the Penn State Nittany Lions extended their winning streak to five games after a dominating Big 10 win over UCLA, 27-11.
Heading over to Kyle Field, home of The 12th Man, a thrilling top-25 and SEC matchup between #25 Texas A&M and #9 Missouri was one we will look at for years to come. Coming into this game, Texas A&M was a 2.5-point favorite despite being the lower ranked team. With quarterback Conner Weigman, running back Le’Veon Moss, and a fantastic offensive line, the Aggies were able to destroy the higher-ranked Missouri and shatter the 2.5-point favorite with a final score of 41-10. Moss rushed for 138 yards on 12 carries with 3 touchdowns. Moss averaged 11.5 yards per carry and destroyed the Missouri defense.
In Arkansas, the Razorbacks snuck away with another massive upset vs Tennessee. The unranked Razorbacks faced off vs #4 Tennessee at home. The Vols going into Arkansas were favored by over 14 points. Arkansas started the game with a field goal in the first quarter leaving Tennessee scoreless in the 1st half. However, Tennessee came out striking early in the second half. Tennessee scored two straight touchdowns in the 3rd quarter while Arkansas only scored one. Going into the 4th quarter, the Tennessee Volunteers were up 14-10. However, the Razorbacks still had hope and scored 9 points in the 4th quarter while leaving Tennessee scoreless. The Razorbacks upset #4 Tennessee 19-14, and won a massive game to change the landscape of college football.
Jumping across the USA to Washington, a rematch of last season’s National Championship between Washinton and #10 Michigan took place. The Huskies, although unranked, come into this game a 1.5-point favorite over Michigan. Michigan’s one-dimensional offense with Alex Orji and Donovan Edwards has shown that the offense is less explosive than in recent years. The Huskies take advantage of this and sneak away with a home win 27-17.
Out in horse country, the SMU Mustangs upset #22 Louisville. SMU got off to a hot start vs the Cardinals taking an early lead and never looking back. SMU leaves Louisville with a win, 34-27.
Up north in Minnesota, The USC boys out west head to the University of Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers. USC, ranked #11, was a double-digit favorite in this game. However, the unranked Golden Gophers beat those odds. Winning the game, 24-17.
Finally, the game everyone has been intrigued to hear about. #1 Alabama vs Vanderbilt. Coming into this game, Alabama was favored by a staggering 23.5 points. Vanderbilt, who had never won a game against an AP top 5 team, is hosting Alabama. Who, just the week before, beat Georgia in one of the craziest games in recent memory. Vanderbilt, who has never had the hype about football, unlike Alabama and the rest of the SEC, came into this game with a chip on their shoulder. Vanderbilt struck first to take the lead 7-0 on Alabama early in the first quarter. On the next drive, Vanderbilt intercepted the ball and returned it for a touchdown to take a 2 touchdown lead early vs Alabama. Heisman candidate quarterback, Jalen Milroe, for the Alabama offense ran in the touchdown from 8 yards out to cut the lead to only one touchdown. Heading into halftime, Vanderbilt maintained a lead of 23-14 over the Crimson Tide. At the start of the second half. Jalen Milroe struck first to cut the lead to 23-21. Diego Pavia, the Vanderbilt quarterback, scored another touchdown to extend the lead 30-21. However, Ryan Williams, the star freshman wide receiver just wouldn’t go away. Scoring a 58 yard touchdown to stay in the game 28-30. After a couple touchdowns in the 4th quarter. Alabama squeezed the deficit to 40-35. Vanderbilt, with possession and Alabama with no timeouts. Vanderbilt got two first downs to seal the game, shockingly upsetting #1 Alabama, 40-35.
