The question of whether students should have homework has been debated for years. Some people argue that homework is important and it’s crucial for students to practice what they learned outside of class, but others believe that homework causes unnecessary stress and robs students of personal time. Both sides have valid points, but it’s challenging to strike a balance.
Homework can be useful to students because it gives them a chance to review and better understand topics outside of class. Studies have shown that homework makes students remember information longer and score better on tests compared to students who don’t do homework. Homework can also teach time management skills and discipline— these skills are very valuable in college and adult life.
On the other hand, too much homework can be overwhelming. When students have numerous different assignments from different classes, it is extremely hard to keep up with every single one of them and it can also lead to students treating homework like chores therefore they don’t learn as much from it. Homework can also cut into valuable time that children have with their families, or it can get in the way of a job or after school activities, all of which are very important for a person to have in their life.
Teachers should be given a limit on the homework they can assign throughout the school year, or they should only assign homework after talking to other teachers and checking whether students are already being overwhelmed with assignments.
Over the weekend I talked to a student athlete, Nash Raisor, and he stated that, “I don’t believe in homework… I think it’s a waste of time, because I learn more from being in class and listening to the teacher rather than doing it at home with other things going on.”
To sum this up, homework can be helpful because it helps some students better learn what they heard in class, but too much can lead to stress and overwhelm some kids. Teachers should try their best to find a balance so students can focus on both school and their own life.
