Throughout the years, technology has advanced to an extreme degree from the invention of the telephone to Artificial Intelligence, and there seems to be no end in sight. Along with the evolution of technology, there has been a shift of perspective on the world. From attention spans shortening to people not enjoying the little things in life, I can tell you that technology has a damaging effect on humanity.
Attention spans
An attention span is classified as the amount of time an individual is able to mentally concentrate on an item. Before the widespread expansion of technology, the average attention span was 20 minutes. It has now dropped to forty-seven seconds. Considering that most people watch videos on apps like TikTok, where you can scroll to something new the second you get bored, this isn’t surprising. However, this has created many issues, like not being able to focus in class. This could create way bigger problems for our generation in years to come.
The Need For Technology In Schools
Technology has taken over the world around us, but most importantly, it has taken our schools by storm; just 50 years ago, schools looked much different. Over time, chalk boards turned to smart boards and writing on paper became typing on Chromebooks. These small changes have the potential to lead students down a dangerous path. Sitting and staring at screens for six hours a day is no way for a young child to live. Schools should not be teaching kids that technology is essential for learning. A Chromebook might be more convenient for schools, but that should never be put over the well-being of a child. I believe that if schools were to go back to the old ways, students would be more engaged and less addicted to technology.
Make a Change
All in all, we know that technology has transformed the world we live in today. But it makes me think, what would happen if we went back to the old ways? If you ask me, I think the world would be a much more secure place. A world without technology would not be filled with as much comparison and we could focus on what we love.
