Imagine waking up to find out that national parks are closed, government offices are empty, and federal workers are worried about the next time they’ll get paid. When government leaders can’t agree, the country’s usual activities are put on hold. This usually happens when lawmakers cannot decide on a budget or spending plan. During a shutdown, federal workers may not get paid on time, and some government services, like national parks or administrative offices, may close temporarily. A government shutdown affects not only the people who work for the government but also the citizens who rely on these services every day.
The government shutdown happened because of partisan differences or disagreements over federal spending levels (for example, foreign aid rescission’s and health insurance subsidies.) Roughly 900,000 federal employees are sent home without compensation , and about 700,000 more are required to work without pay. The shutdown, which lasted several weeks, caused many public services to terminate, national parks to close, loan processing to be delayed, and federal agencies were to be left short-staffed. This event highlighted how political conflicts in
Washington, DC can have serious consequences for workers and citizens across the country. Many Americans grew frustrated as the shutdown dragged on, urging leaders to find a compromise and proceed with the government.
Budget cuts within the government refer to the spending in certain areas in the federal budget, and they are used to reduce the national deficit or debt. Lawmakers target agencies for cuts so that they can save money for other funding. For example, Congress pushes to either cut funding for social welfare programs like Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), and even housing assistance, or they try to reduce defense spending, which involves our military, equipment, and development within research. When funding gets reduced for the education systems, environmental protection, and along with restrictions on health funding, can weaken the nation’s ability to respond to health emergencies or can’t support low-income clinics. When lawmakers are unable to agree on what they will be cutting budgets from, these disagreements can delay the passage of bills and lead to a government shutdown if they are unable to agree.
