The Woodford County High School wrestling team is well-known across the state of Kentucky. With 13 team state titles, they hold the record for the most in the state. This season, the team faced a lot of adversity, especially with injuries. Even with the challenges thrown at them, the team still found a way to make ends meet and maintain their success within the state.

With the season coming to a close and the state tournament approaching, excitement is high and the determination these wrestlers possess is clear. The dedication shown by the team in recent weeks will boost them towards triumph at the end of the season, and their outstanding performance will be covered as the end of the season draws near.

Jan. 26th-  State Duals @ Lindsey Wilson College (Columbia, KY)

Dual tournaments are when two teams go head-to-head and the winning team advances. The top two teams from each section qualify for State Duals, where the top teams in the state compete for a state dual title.

The first round of state duals Woodford County vs. Meade County, resulting in a win for Woodford County with a score of 57 to 22.

The second round of state duals Woodford County vs. Simon Kenton, resulting in a win for Woodford with a score of 45 to 27.

The third round of state duals Woodford County vs. Moore, resulting in a win for Moore with a score of 43 to 30.

The outcome of the third round put Woodford in the run for third place, which they forfeited to Oldham County.

Jan. 30th (Wed.)- JV Regionals @ Scott Co. HS (Georgetown, KY)

Woodford had 12 wrestlers compete and nine qualifiers for JV State on Saturday, February 2nd. Only the top two wrestlers from each weight class qualify for the JV State tournament.


Feb. 2nd- JV State Tournament @ Moore Traditional (Louisville, KY)

Woodford took nine wrestlers to JV State in Louisville for a chance to become a JV state champ.

Two wrestlers obtained the title of a JV State Champ.

In the weight class 138 with a 16 man bracket, Jonathan Pittman came out on top. Pittman had a pin over William Pfister of St. Xavier advancing him to the second round where he got another pin over Jadavin Bradly of Valley. In his semi-final match, he attained another pin over Conley Combs of Dupont Manual. In the finals match, he achieved another pin over  Zach Schultz of St. Xavier

In the weight class 170 with a 16 man bracket Deandrick (DJ) Bernabe came out on top. Bernabe had a major decision over Blake Durham of St. Xavier advancing him to the second round where he got a pin over Hayden Hartlage of Desales.In his semi-final match, he attained a sudden victory over Jeremiah Harlan of Moore. In his finals match, he attained a pin over Connor Leslie of Frederick Douglass.

Woodford County had five girls compete at the first annual Girls State Championship in Lexington, KY.

Feb, 9th- Region 5 Tournament @ North Oldham HS, Goshen, KY

The regional tournament determines whether or not the wrestler advances to the state tournament. Wrestlers must place in the top four to continue to state. Out of the fourteen varsity wrestlers, twelve Woodford County wrestlers placed in the top four and one placed fifth, sending them to the state tournament as alternates in the situation where one of the placers for their region is unable to compete. Throughout the tournament, Woodford County and Oldham County competed in a tight race for the regional championship. In the end, Woodford trailed Oldham by only half of a point.
