In the Mind of the Migos

Culture II album review

In the Mind of the Migos

The Atlanta based group, Migos, have certainly been making a lot of buzz in their recent come up. The group released a few mix tapes and one prior studio album before releasing Culture on January 27th, 2017. The album hit number one on the US Billboard 200 as well as The top Hip-Hop charts. The album was certified platinum in July 2017, and was nominated for the Best Rap Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. This was all possible because of songs like Bad and Boujee (went quadruple platinum) and T-Shirt. Now, after setting the stage, we can talk about Migos newest album Culture II which was released 364 days after is predecessor.

Culture II once again hit number one on the top charts which isn’t quite surprising with its 24 songs and star-studded cast. Some cast members include: Travis Scott, Drake, 21 Savage, Gucci Mane, Big Sean, Post Malone, Nicki Minaj, and Cardi B. Talk about a recipe for success. The album released with two lead singles, Motorsport and Stir Fry, Which absolutely showed the pure power the album was gonna hold.

Narcos

I love the vibe this song offers. It has a tropical, South American beat. This song has such a good flow and feel to it much like the rest of the album. The song has an amazing chorus handled by Quavo as always, but also has Offset on it which is rare. While the song has a bad message, it does keep this energy that is perfect. The verses also fit the the message of the song which is something not often seen in rap songs as they tend to stray off.

Stir Fry

This was the second released single before the album’s release, and it’s understandable since it’s one of the best the album has to offer. The song got amazing reception from critics and fans for being so different from what they usually make. The song has been described as pop-rap and I think that fits. Stir Fry picks up with a chorus from Quavo that actually has depth and vibes. Offset picks up the first verse and it feels absolutely perfect, it leaves nothing left to want. The song then proceeds to go to another chorus wave. Takeoff takes the last verse, and nails it perfect with another relevant verse that fits the theme. There is nothing really to say about this song other than the style is amazing, and it might just be in the top three of the album.

White Sand

The Migos song with three features. I’m a big fan of this one with Quavo, Travis Scott, and Ty Dolla Sign on the chorus and rap verses from Big Sean, Takeoff, and Offset. When the song starts you get to hear Scott start the hook and he absolutely kills it, he’s amazing at that. Next a quick little bit from Dolla Sign which leaves more to want since it’s his only part in this song. Big Sean tackles his verse next and he does it better than expected, his flow is so smooth with some nice references. Quavo jumps on the chorus with Scott which he does pretty well although the chorus belongs to Scott in this one. Offset jumps on his verse next. Although it’s nothing that stands out its just a great verse. Offset ends his verse as Takeoff starts his. Takeoff had the second best verse behind Big Sean with how he rapped on this song. He used a different sound he hasn’t really done before. Overall, just a great, star studded song.

Gang Gang

I’m so proud of what they did here. If you look at the title you’d never expect what this song would be about. This song is more of a love song which is something I didn’t expect at all from Migos. They’ve never really done anything like this before. This song has a nice feel with a beat that just flows. Despite Offset not being on this song, which is a bit of a disappointment, Quavo and Takeoff handle it very well which is shocking. The song has just such a happy vibe and such an unexpected feel. Although most people have already wrote this song off, I think it deserves a chance for any Migos fan who likes their signature sound. I hope to maybe see more like this in the future.

Motorsport

Lead single off the album with Stir Fry? I couldn’t think of a better song to show the public just how amazing and how much energy is going into the album. Motorsport is just straight energy. The whole song just has a great flow and an upbeat feel. This song flew up the charts a month before Culture II even came out. The verse starts with a Quavo verse which was probably the most disappointing verse as it didn’t have a lot to it. Then it goes to Offset, he picks that tempo up with his word play. After Offset the flow just keeps going, it passes to Cardi B who throws a bunch of references to her fiance, Offset. Next is Nicki Minaj who delivers a quite amazing verse surprisingly with a few references to Quavo. To end it all, Takeoff handles the final verse, and although he caught some heat for some of the things he said, if you ignored those it was a pretty good verse. This song was just a pump up song to how great the album was gonna be and I was not disappointed.

Notice Me

My favorite song from the album. This song is tackled by Post Malone and Quavo on the hook, and two rap verses from Offset and Takeoff. I love the vibe of the song it’s such a relaxing song although it follows the typical Post Malone feel of a “sad” song. Quavo and Post Malone absolutely destroy the chorus, I love how the song starts with the soundbite and then goes into the song. Quavo doesn’t just repeat one word and actually makes a meaningful verse. Post absolutely destroys his turn, that’s just his thing. The two rap verses make a big entrance on each, plus they follow the purpose of the song. The whole song is just about having riches and just wanting attention, from whoever. Although it’s a shallow purpose, it still made an amazing song. I’ll go ahead and name this one of the best ones of the album, but it’s not for everyone.

Walk It Talk It

The first Migos song with Drake since Versace? Sign me up. Drake has always been very public about his love for Migos, it’s so exciting to see a song with both of them again. Now with that being said, I was disappointed with this song. A lot of love for Quavo but his chorus in this song is awful and not even nice to listen to. The beat was just average, nothing to flat out blow me away. The Drake verse at around the two minute mark doesn’t disappoint in the slightest, it’s such a clever verse with a few references to the Migos. Even the Offset verse and Takeoff verse are pretty outstanding despite their length. I think this song has a TON of potential that got ruined by an awful chorus and pretty short verses that could have been double their length.
