Versailles, KY, has long been considered the perfect small town. From block parties during the summer to beautiful decorations in the windows of small businesses, walking on Main Street feels like being transported onto the set of a Hallmark movie. One of the staples of this idyllic portrait is The Amsden, a coffee shop, play space, and mercantile area that’s developed in the heart of downtown.
The building was the original site of Watkin’s Tavern, which burned down in 1886 and was rebuilt as the Amsden Bank building in 1890. As one of the oldest buildings downtown, it’s housed numerous businesses since its closing in 1931, the latest of which is our local caffeine stop.
The Amsden maintains the building’s original character (as seen in the preserved “J. Amsden & Co Bank” stone lettering on the front entrance). While the space has been renovated to support modern business practices, it has remained a staple for the community. On select weekends and holidays in Versailles, you’re likely to see the business doors propped open for the latest event. From “An Evening in Stars Hollow” to “Galentine’s Day” celebrations, the Amsden typically leads Versailles’s small businesses in planning and organizing fun events.
The next of these events is coming up very soon: November 29th! On “Small Business Saturday”, the downtown store will swing its doors open for a day of Christmas-themed celebrations and a side of coffee. According to their online promotions, Christmas caroling will be happening downtown from 10 AM to 3 PM, followed almost immediately by complimentary horse and carriage rides from 4 to 7 PM. The downtown streets are sure to be full, so feel free to step directly into The Amsden storefront.
The Amsden will be offering its own specialties for the momentous day. From free Amsden mugs to the first 25 customers, to entries for an entire year of free coffee, the eight-year anniversary of the store is cause for celebration. I, personally, will be sure to check out the complimentary hot chocolate and toppings bar (and try their annual peppermint drink). During their almost decade-long presence downtown, they’ve renovated to provide child play opportunities, expanded their menu countless times, and established themselves as a well-loved force in our community.
Make sure you journey to Main Street on November 29th, as it’s sure to be yet another day of community bonding. For anyone looking into the Small Business Saturday itinerary, more info is available on this page: The Amsden Facebook . Walking through the streets of downtown reveals the Christmas Spirit that our small community does so well, with string lights, Christmas wreaths, and window decorations on every storefront. The day will have an activity for every person in your family, so make sure to celebrate the holiday season with a day of delicious drinks and a little community love!
