As the Christmas season quickly approaches, everyone begins to get in the holiday spirit. Although I love Christmas time and the many traditions that come along with it, some popular Christmas things might be better forgotten this year. From Christmas decorations to what is on the table at Christmas dinner, some traditions are better than others when it comes to putting us in the Christmas spirit.
Christmas trees get put up earlier and earlier every year, but the ones with colored lights might as well not be put up at all. Some may think they’re fun and colorful, but I think they distract from the cozy ambiance typically associated with Christmas. When curling up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate the only thing that could ruin the moment is looking over and seeing a tree covered in small red, yellow, and blue bulbs. The multicolored lights clash with the red and green typically associated with Christmas and when decorating your home they can completely throw off the Christmas vibes. Rather than decorating trees with colored lights, we should opt for soft white bulbs. They create a cozy feel and can make your tree look much more classic.
As we all debate at what point we can start listening to Christmas music, it makes me wonder if some songs should be permanently removed from our Christmas playlists. One song that is always a skip for me is “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” by The Jackson 5. It may bring parents a laugh but when it comes on the radio, it can raise questions from skeptical kids. Why is Santa cheating on Mrs. Claus? Is Santa actually just my dad dressed up in a big red suit? It negates the wholesome perception of Santa and can lead to questioning kids. There are thousands of less problematic Christmas songs to choose from and this season we should steer clear from “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”.
Overall, Christmas is a wonderful season that gives us time to be with the ones we love. Festive activities can break up the mundanity of the winter months and bring cheer into our lives. Although some aspects of Christmastime are better than others, being with the people we love can reverse the anger caused by ugly Christmas lights and silly songs.
