Woodford County Boys Soccer is off to a great start in their post-season with a district championship. They won this title by first beating Shelby County 3-2 with 2 goals from Silas Damm and 1 goal from Leland Newell with assists from Will Mckale and Damm. In the championship game, Woodford beat Collins 2-0 with goals from Edgardo Bertrand and Isaac Howard. This victory can also be accredited to goalkeeper Buckley Greathouse who made many great saves during the game.
After this extremely impressive win, Woodford soccer hosted the first round of the 8th region tournament against Grant County on Monday, October 14th at Falling Springs. Woodford won this game 6-0 with 5 goals from Silas Damm and 1 goal from Edgardo Bertrand, along with 2 assists from Ian Sergent. In the next round Woodford will face North Oldam, who had beat them earlier in the year.
Woodford Soccer is a high-performance team that has only lost two games this season. They hold a 16-2-1 record, with their only losses being to North Oldham and Paul Lawrence Dunbar. This record includes a win over Henry Clay, which is a team ranked 26th nationally. This is an extremely impressive record considering that the team lost many seniors last year.
When asked about what made the team so successful this year, junior Earle Stillwell said “I think we’ve created a strong sense of brotherhood which is something that has been lacking in the past years and it helps us succeed.” When asked about Woodford’s chances at regionals Stillwell also said “I think we have a really good shot at regionals because we’ve been playing really well recently and we have a lot of momentum.”
