Some of the students of WCHS are part of an All-Star cheer team based out of Lexington. Kentucky Cheer Academy (KCA) is located on Nandino Boulevard and competes nationwide. The competitions typically last throughout the weekend and are usually out of state. The end-of-the-season competition is in Disney at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, just like the National High School Cheerleading Championship. The teams left Wednesday, May 3rd, and competed on May 5th, 6th, and 7th. Alyssa Kemper, Delaynie Shuck, Gabby Gampper, Elizabeth Williams, Cash Carpenter, and Ashlynn Gampper competed at the 2023 D2 Summit Championship. The teams consist of a Junior level 2 (Rich Strike), a Junior level 3 (Thunder), a Senior level 4 (Dream Girls), and a Senior level 5 (Halo). After a very close first round, Thunder advanced and placed 17th out of 62 teams!

“It was all worth the blood, sweat, and tears to have a chance at competing on that notorious stage.” – Cash Carpenter

“I had fun when we all came together as a gym to watch and support each team.” – Delaynie Shuck

“Cheer has taught me many things and I don’t know where I’d be without othe support of my coaches and team. As much as I hate it, I love cheer. All the experiences you gain, make the difficult days worth it.” – Alyssa Kemper
