When did you know that you wanted to pursue acting?

“When I was a kid I would make up and act out stories about detectives or pirates, I think. There may have also been dragons. I acted in some school plays and I was the lion in Wizard of Oz at summer camp. I got serious about acting a few years before I booked Grey’s when I started studying at an acting studio called Warner Loughlin Studios. I fell in love with acting in a new way and decided to pursue it as a career, because why not? Well, there are actually a lot of reasons to not, but none of them outweighed the reasons to go for it, so I did.”

If you had not gone into acting, what alternate career would you have pursued?

“I was into being a professional singer-songwriter for a while. I released a few EPs and performed a lot, but it didn’t work out for me to do that full time. If I couldn’t be an actor or a musician, I think working at an animal sanctuary would be great. When I was little I said I wanted to be a veterinarian, but I’m not actually suited to studying any form of medicine. Luckily, I am well suited to playing a doctor on TV!”

How did you react when you found out you got the part of Dr. Casey Parker?

Alex Blue Davis
“Never for one day will I take for granted the opportunity to be a part of the @greysabc family and meet all of you. Thank YOU from the bottom of my heart.”

“I grabbed my wife while I was on the phone with my agent and manager. They told me I booked it and we all hollered together for a minute. My reps kept talking and explaining some stuff, while my wife and I jumped around the apartment quietly and silently cried and hugged each other a lot.”

What is it like playing a transgender character?

“It’s awesome since I’m trans in real life. In the past, trans folks weren’t even invited to audition for trans roles, let alone play them. I’m grateful I get to be a part of changing the television landscape and making it more inclusive so everyone can see themselves in the shows they love, and also so that people who aren’t trans can get to see who we are beside our genders. That’s a big thing for Parker. He’s fine with being trans, he knows that’s part of his story, and he also knows there’s so much more to him than just being trans. He’s a doctor, a techie, a veteran, a lover of blueberries; those are the things about himself he deals with on a daily basis. He’s got a great perspective about life so I think he’s a cool role model for trans folks who are finding themselves and a great teacher for people who aren’t trans. He’s even a great role model for me personally because he’s so disciplined and focused. Quite a clever problem solver.”

What has been your favorite scene to film on Grey’s Anatomy?

“I loved filming the scene where Bailey talks about making a zombie’s liver- I wanna say episode 15×06? She’s doing chest compressions on a dead guy to keep his liver alive so she can transplant it. Chandra was so funny in that scene, like a mad Doctor Frankenstein, and the cadaver looked so real it was creepy; Camilla and I, and pretty much everyone on set, were cracking up.”

What is it like for your kids to see their daddy on the TV?

They love it!

What is your favorite thing about Songs for Surgery?

“Two things:

1.) I loved recording it with my friends, Luci and Lucas. We have a lot of fun together in general, and specifically around music. It was one of those magical collaborations that happened at the perfect time.

2.) I loved seeing how Grey’s fans felt. I was hoping they would. I’d been given so much support and encouragement by these people online in my first season on the show, and I wanted to do something to show my appreciation. I knew they loved some of these songs because they were requested a lot as possible covers for me to do in short song videos I used to post. I was so happy to give people full recorded versions that they were excited to listen to, which made them feel something they needed to feel. Music has that power for me, and it was amazing to be able to be a part of fans’ nostalgic and/or meaningful experiences around these songs.”

I’m so excited to see what you create and how you are going to make all the older generations respect you and follow you into a brighter future world.

Do you have any advice for current high schoolers?

“Enjoy your time of self-discovery. Regardless of what you’re told you’re supposed to do, or what everyone else around you is doing, or what you think you’re supposed to be doing or learning, find time to move toward what calls you. When you find something you love to do, throw yourself into it with everything you’ve got. If it stops making you happy, try a different approach, or give it a rest for a minute and come back to it before you quit. And also, check out what Greta Thunberg is up to if you haven’t already. I think that right now, she has some great advice for people of all ages. I gotta say current high schoolers are some of the raddest people on earth.”
