Fortnite is a word that is lately on the tip of anybody’s tongue who enjoys games. The game has swept the world since its release in September 2017, where it quickly became the biggest game on the market even with it being free-to-play. Fortnite amassed a large following from all types of people since its easy to pick up and play with friends. The game plays in a battle-royale format where 100 players are put on a map that is slowly shrinking, where the players are either solo or in small teams of up to five. This format can be related to the basic grasp of the book series The Hunger Games. Players compete until one player or one squad is left standing in an intense but interesting format. The game racked up around 10 million players two weeks after release.

The game has gotten such amazing feedback for its complete free-to-play experience. This is where all content in the game is free and only the cosmetic content is locked behind a paywall. This has been a big problem in the world of video games where content that should be in games gets locked behind pay walls that can reach insane amounts of money since they usually put them behind gambling-like systems called “loot boxes.”

Fortnite producer, Epic games, recently got the amazing idea to release the game to iOS platforms with plans to release to Android as well.  In the few days that it has been released on iOS, the mobile version has reached number one on the most downloads in 13 countries. I feel that this is mainly due to partly the hype of the game and partly due to how well the game was ported to mobile. The game allows you to keep/use any unlocks that you make on a console or on the mobile version. This is revolutionary because it has never been done before for any game I’ve ever seen.

To actually review the mobile version is something I’ve gone back and forth on. I saw things I enjoyed, and things I didn’t enjoy. So far I’ve had an opportunity to play a few solo games and two squad games (since duo’s are disabled at the moment). The graphics are insanely well done and match that of the other versions of Fortnite. There is no frame drop or lag. There is a slight rendering distance where things far away aren’t loaded in very well to allow better running of things close up. The games cross-play was kinda confusing and I chose to only play against other mobile players due to me being at a distinct disadvantage because of my next point. The controls are so hard to use. I know it’s mobile but I feel the placement of thing is very awkward in spots.

Overall, the quality of this game is crazy and up there with some of the best mobile games I have ever seen. With the company making 7 million dollars in only the first week, I think it’s safe to say that Fortnite is here to stay for quite some time. I would rank the game a solid 9/10 and the mobile at about a 7/10 due to the tricky controls.

If you are thinking about giving it a try, I recommend it. Good luck chasing after every players dream, “dubs.
