Jam with Cole

A Blues jam in A minor

Cole Romine, Staff Reporter

Jam sessions have been around as long as sounds have, whether it be cave men banging on rocks to simulate rhythm, or highly skilled musicians playing beautiful music. Jam music is spontaneous and comes mainly from knowledge of scales and improvisation. Learning to just jam is a great skill for any musician to learn; it teaches you great timing and how to adapt to different musical situations. A way to simulate a jam session with only one musician is through the use of backing tracks, however this is more difficult because there is no communication between players, so you learn to adapt to what you hear from the music rather than what you see the other players telling you. Jam music is the very basis of musical collaboration and a fun way to expand your musical horizons.
