“Aren’t you so excited for the new high school?” This is a question that I hear at least once a week at this point. I should be excited — we should be excited. But there is a lot to be said for a place that we have called our own for almost four years now — a lot to be said for home. Would it really be a great thing for our seniors, who have made it work and thrived in this old building, to make them relearn everything about their school in their final semester of school?
This new building is going to be really nice. It has long been due, and it is a welcome addition and improvement to Woodford County Public Schools. The much anticipated opening of this school is set to be the beginning of this upcoming semester, starting in January. This school is no-doubt a great thing for the students of Woodford County. However, why should we be so rushed to move in? Is everything that is happening this year worth it?
As a senior, I do not think it is a good idea for Woodford County to push so hard to get into the new building by the start of the next semester. First of all, my classmates and I have made it work, and thrived, with this building for three and a half years now. This is the building that we call home. Albeit, not the nicest home, but we make it work. We are familiar with every part of this building, and there are countless memories that I have, and that I know other students have as well. We appreciate this building, no matter how many issues there are. So that begs the question: Why the rush?
Our “finals week” is already a week earlier, with both teachers and students in a mad scramble to get work done before Dec. 13th — all before everyone comes back for another week of no instruction?
The building crew is working overtime to try and get this building finished by the time we have to move, which is just a few weeks. They have had to hire more workers multiple times, and they are still not finished as of right now.
In my opinion, WCHS should wait to move until the start of next school year. We appreciate the new building very much. That is not the issue. The problem is that, for the senior class specifically, we would have to relearn everything about our school, just to be there for only a few months. We should let the crew perfect the building. Let them take their time and do a thorough job that is above satisfactory. Rushing to get into this building seems to me like there will be many issues that are both foreseen and unforeseen. We aren’t even into the building yet, and there are already scheduling issues, not to mention the fact that nearly all the students have no idea what this building even looks like on the inside.
I think we should let this current building stay our home for the remainder of this school year. I would like to finish my high school journey and experience at a place that I am familiar with.
