Coraline is a 2009 stop-motion horror movie produced by Henry Selick who is the same director of The Nightmare Before Christmas. This is by far one of my favorite Halloween movies to watch for the season. It’s creepy and downright disturbing depending on how scared you are of some body horror but what’s the story actually about? The movie follows the namesake of the title: A girl named Coraline who has just moved to a new house unwillingly due to financial issues. She’s an ambitious and courageous girl who can’t take “no” for an answer as she has to adapt to her new home shared by two other residents. That is until she searches around the house for something to do and discovers a mysterious door within the wall, leading to the “Otherworld” within the house. This is where we approach spoiler territory and where I stop my summary, go watch the movie to experience the spooky.
So what do I personally believe about the movie? Well as stated before it is one of my most beloved movies to watch just in general, but it does have its flaws. The plot is kinda cheesy whenever you get into it, but it does send a lovely message. Another fall point is that Coraline the character might not be for everyone: she’s strong-headed and does some slightly stupid things that anyone can see as wrong. However, these points all cannot compare to the incredible animation and sound effects made by the team behind it because they all did a fantastic job with the stop-motion and the soundtrack is phenomenal–so go watch it! It’s a movie you truly don’t want to miss out on before the season ends. You can watch Coraline on a variety of streaming services including Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max (Or Max) or if you’re a part of the Sci-Fi and Fantasy class you can watch it for free.
