Why You Should Join the Woodford County Library Young Adult Book Club!

The Woodford County Public Library is hosting a book club for young readers. This club is hosted by Ashley Householder and Laurel Keller.

On October 11, I had the pleasure of getting to meet Ms. Householder.  Householder loves birds and Disney movies, and in her spare time she reads and writes. Householder was born in Richmond but moved to Lexington. Before working as a librarian, she worked in a bookstore, but she decided that she needed a more laid back environment— one where she wasn’t constantly trying to sell a book to someone. Thus, she found that the library was the perfect place.

Since beginning her work at the Woodford County Library, Householder has taken over hosting a young adult book club. The club is very diverse with what kind of books they’re reading. This Halloween, they’re reading a murder mystery. Around February, they’ll read a romance book. Householder and Keller try to find books for all kinds of people, for boys or girls, no matter what they enjoy. On the Goodreads website (linked below) they post all the books they have read.

The club is laid back and isn’t pushing anyone to finish the book. “So there are no discussion questions and no pressure if they didn’t finish it or didn’t like it,” Ashley said.

We just kind of have a casual discussion about what we liked and didn’t like about the book.

Some might be wondering: “Why should I attend?” Ashley said, “I think because I know they get a lot of homework and things that are not so fun that they have to do for class… Like, if you ever read something for English class, it’s gonna be very stressful to try and get it done. And you’re gonna be tested and quizzed on it, and we don’t do any of that. We just kind of have a casual discussion about what we liked and didn’t like about the book.”

Laurel Keller is also a published author herself, she wrote the book Echoes of Fire which is going to be a trilogy.

The book club meetings are the third Wednesday of every month at 4:00 and last for about an hour. They are always held in the library community room or kids room. We hope you come out and find a book you love!
