A New Look For A New Season: 2022 Boy’s Soccer
The boy’s soccer team had an amazing season last year, finishing with a 13-5-1 record before losing in the regional semifinals to North Oldham, who won the regional tournament and made it to the second round of state, after a slow start. The boys are currently running on an eight-game point streak with wins and ties against some good teams, like South Oldham, who they beat 2-0. “We kinda got off to a rough start,” says midfielder, Alexandre Antoine (12), ”we’ve been picking up these last few weeks with a few wins, it’s been up and down so far.” Currently sitting at 6-2-2, the boys are looking to improve to win districts and go far in regionals.
However, the team last year looked a lot different from the team this year, losing 8 seniors, including goals and points leader, Owen Damm, as well as starting goalie, Andy Johnson. New goalkeeper Paul Quintero (11), has helped the team this year, with 9 saves and 3 goals allowed while splitting minutes with other goalkeeper, Michael Nickels (11). A couple of players have also helped to fill the scoring hole left by the senior class, with Caleb Gomez (11), and Brian Alvor (12) being tied for the lead in team scoring, and Jonah Hall (12) being right behind them.
The team has also gotten help from some underclassmen. Woody Morris (10) and Ian Sergent (10) play integral parts as subs and get decent minutes in most games. Silas Damm (10) and Earle Stillwell (9) are helping to replace the points Owen Damm put up last year. Silas has 5 points and Earle is 4th on the team in scoring.
But you can’t talk about this team without mentioning the team defense, led by Chase Willis (12) and Sawyer Gribble (11). Both backs have done an outstanding job this year, stopping almost everything coming their way, from the middle and the wings. Allowing a low 1.2 goals per game, their defense has allowed the team to shine so far this year.
“I want to try to get to regions and beat North Oldham this year, they’ve always given us trouble in the past,” Alex said. After the loss last year, the boys are looking to get to a rematch in regionals, but they have a tough schedule ahead of them, with notable games against Kentucky Country Day and Martha Layne Collins High School coming up on the schedule. While the end is uncertain, this year’s team certainly has a good chance to follow up on last year’s success and maybe even outshine it.
