T-Shirt Project

Above you see some sample t-shirts from Ms. Gibson’s Creative Writing classes.

These shirts represent one person individually and as just themselves. No one hid any parts of themselves to make themselves look like someone they are not. When people presented their t-shirt, they were hesitant. The reason was the fear of being judged. However, after a couple of people presented, people got more willing and comfortable presenting their T-Shirts.

Being yourself shouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable!

Being yourself should be something you’re proud of. Artistic or not everyone tried and succeeded in showing who they really are. The classes are so diverse and there were many people who found new friends who had the same interests and hobbies. What I’d like everyone to take away from this is being yourself helps you find friends that you’ll enjoy being around.

Student Voices:

Why do you think being yourself is important?

Jordan Vickers(11)- “You feel more free as a person to be who you are.”

Jaylyn Stokes(10)- “There is no one else like you, or that can be you.”

Emma Milburn(9)- “Because if you are not yourself people can control you more.”

Abby Frakes(10)- “If you are not yourself then who are you?”

Why were you inspired to speak up about this topic?

Jordan Vickers(11)- “People get to visualize and experience who you are.”

Jaylyn Stokes(10)-  “Showing who you are in front of others without being afraid to be who you are.”

Emma Milburn(9)- “That being you is ok and it’s not something to be ashamed of.”

Abby Frakes(10)- “For quiet people and shy people the most you can do is say “hi”.”

What would be the best thing people could take away from this project?

Jordan Vickers(11)- “That you should be able to show yourself.”

Jaylyn Stokes(10)- “I thought the topic was important and it was important that people should express themselves.”

Emma Milburn(9)-  “Because I want to try my best to help people know it’s ok to be themselves.”

Abby Frakes(10)- “To take a stand for people who have been treated poorly for being themselves.”

Ashley Morrison’s Featured Poem:

Shirts and Shadows

How can something that’s just there mean so much?
Random paper shirts hanging on a string.
You would never think that they would mean so much.
Although they do.
Each one was made by a student to represent them.
Not very special since many classrooms do this.
To me it’s special.
The light of the lantern nearby created shadows.
The shadows looked like the shirts were connected.
Many emotions and thoughts raced through my head.
Each shirt represents a person so the shadows do too.
The shadows show the connections that many people don’t see.
I admit I didn’t see them till now.
The shirts show the differences, the shadows show the connections.
Maybe we should learn from the shirts and shadows and see how we’re all connected despite our differences.
