I have a relationship with someone who lives across the ocean.  Some people do not understand a long distance relationship, but to me, a long distance relationship is one where you trust someone to the point that you love them.

Meeting Up

In a long distance relationship, there are many ways to define the relationship.  My significant other and I have a meeting date in May when I graduate. I asked him if he could come and he is going to try to visit for two weeks. Therefore, to me, this is showing that we have a relationship.

Couple Things

Many couples can go out to the movies and have a date. Well, my boyfriend and I can have a date on Facetime, Facebook Skype, and other apps. Yes, you do not get the feeling like a couple does in person, but you do get a different feeling like getting butterflies in your stomach when you’re watching a movie together.  Another thing you can do is share nighttime calls. Yes, it sounds weird, but it actually helps us to develop our bond and understand each other.

Trust One Another

A big part of every relationship is trust. Every relationship has a bond, but if the bond gets too strong it may push away your significant other. No, this does not mean you have to lose your trust in your relationship. This means that we need to be honest in our relationships, but you don’t need to tell them everything that happens every single minute.

Space

Like every couple, sometimes you need space. With me and my significant other, I was like this when we first started off. I realized that everybody needs space from each other. We did not have calls every single hour but still talked by texting every once and while. It makes our bond even stronger.

Know Each Other’s Schedules

My significant other and I have two different schedules and two different time zones. We get to know each other’s schedule so we know when we are not in a class or at work. If he is on his break at work I will talk to him, but sometimes I will text him when he is not asking how his day is going. When he can, he will get back to me as soon as possible. It’s good to learn each other’s schedules so you and your significant other know what is going on through the week and weekends. Let your significant other have fun instead of bothering them all the time. 

Gifts For Each Other

My significant other and I give each other gifts for birthdays and Christmas stuff. It is not a mandatory thing to do with your significant other, but it gives your significant other a reminder about how much you love them. My boyfriend bought me a necklace for my birthday/Christmas, and I thought we were just doing cards. It was so shocking when I got a necklace.

These are some of the essentials of starting a long distance relationship. This also shows that I am in a true relationship because we care for one another, we do couple things together, we give each other space, we know each other’s schedule, and get gifts for each other.
