Being a student-athlete at Woodford County High School isn’t easy.
Athletes have to find time for their school work, social life, and practices. This article takes a deeper look at how these student-athletes are managing their social lives, school work and their sports!
I recently had the opportunity to speak with senior defensive lineman Hayden Smith on the football team about how he manages his life around sports. He stated that “Setting a schedule of what I’m doing to get done for the day and week and sticking to it, this helps me not forget anything and stay on track in school. But I still try to make time for friends and family on days I have off.” Hayden has so far had a dominant year stopping teams with his size and height, and he is a player college coaches need to be looking out for!
I also got to talk to senior offensive lineman Caleb Caudill about how he is taking care of his school work and how he lives his life around sports. He claimed that “Student comes before athlete, you always have to take care of your school work to go to college or even be lucky enough to get a scholarship. I go home and take care of my school work first before I do anything. Sometimes I go to tutoring sessions on Sundays that Dr. S and coach Johnson have made optional for the football team. It really helps coming into a class knowing I’m all caught up and have everything done. When I’m done with all my work and know I’m good to do whatever, I go hangout with friends.” Caleb has been a leader on the football team from practices to games and has shown he loves the sport and wants to go somewhere with it. College coaches need to keep their eyes out for Caleb!

In conclusion, student-athletes at Woodford County High School face the challenge of balancing sports, schoolwork, and social life. They manage this by creating and sticking to schedules to stay organized and on track. But becoming a good time manager in high school will encourage good time management in the future when high school athletes become adults, whether they continue to be an athlete in college or not.
