The most uncommon event in a high school track meet, with very few athletes competing in it, is the steeplechase. The steeplechase has only had two meets this season: Eastern Relays and Steepleville, a meet specific for steeplechase. This is one of the hardest events in track because it is a distance event with hurdles and a jump into water on top of that. One Woodford County athlete who runs this event, spends a few weeks training for it every season, and looks forward to this event is Larkyn Hewett.
Her first go at the steeplechase this season was at Eastern Relays, which is a prestigious event where you have to have certain qualifying times to be able to run. Also at the University of Louisville, this was a very nice meet to run and a great opportunity for Hewett to show off her Steeplechase talents. In this meet, she had a great 2-kilometer steeplechase, getting 5th place and running an impressive 8:26.78. This time is a very impressive time based on all the running and jumping that happens in this race.
Her next opportunity was at Steepleville, which was also hosted by Eastern High School, but this time it was at their track. Hewett had an even more impressive night, getting a Personal Record while running a 8:25.00. This was good enough for 7th place and a brand new school record in the 2-kilometer steeplechase. This race had some very steep competition, and Hewett handled it very well, proving herself to be Woodford’s best at distance and hurdling.
As a very tough and uncommon event, the steeplechase is a very fun race that has not been a big-time event for Woodford County High School. However, Larkyn Hewett has been a great steeplechase talent for the Jackets, and her School Record on her final Steeplechase chance in her last year of high school is a testament to her hard work and dedication to this event.
