The art program at Woodford County High School is something our student body prides itself in. Ms. Burge, the art teacher at the high school, is constantly upping the projects from years prior.
This year in Art 3, Ms. Burge has taught the students to create houses made of clay. This lengthy process was started in the fall semester and is coming to a close in the near week. For their projects, students were prompted to either choose a house they have lived in or a dream home. This decision would be their inspiration for the next several months of creating.
First, a representation and blueprint of the house was made. Next, the students began to create textured slabs of clay to represent walls. Following that, students put together their houses and fired them. Students strenuously construct the pieces of the house and pieced them together. The last step of this project is glazing and adding color to the homes. Currently, the students are in this stage of the project, where all that remains is one more firing.
Lilly Zaparanick-Brown, junior, states “Glazing is my favorite part of the process because it gives life to the piece, and allows me to show my personality.” When asked why she chose to replicate this house she said, “I chose it because I was scrolling on pinterest and it caught my eye and I thought it was very cute and interesting”. Many students in this class chose to make houses that reflect their childhood home or a house they like.
I also built a house this year. I based it off of my old house I used to live in. This house was very special to me so it was only fitting for me to do a replica of it for my project. I have had an amazing experience with this project so far and Ms. Burge has been so much help to all the students. She is constantly lifting people up and supporting their ideas. Overall, this project was very beneficial to students using their determination and creative side and speaks to Ms. Burge’s tremendous talent as a mentor and teacher.
