WCHS held the first pep rally in the new gym on Friday, February 21st after many cancellations due to snow. Leading up to the pep rally, there were multiple spirit days. These included Wicked Day on Tuesday, extreme Woodford Wednesday, support a senior on Thursday, and neon on the day of the pep rally. The pep rally was filled with classic Woodford Traditions like the tug-of-war, as well as something new this year, a students vs teachers basketball game.
This basketball game was the culmination of a basketball tournament put on by Mrs Hamilton’s exercise science/officiating class. The students in the class had recently gotten their certifications to become basketball referees, so they put on a tournament to get some in-game experience refereeing real, fast-paced basketball games. The tournament featured 4 teams, Sigmas, Coach Diego, Pro-Am, and Skins. In the games leading up to the pep rally, students would arrive before school started and would play an 8-minute game with a penalty shootout replacing over time. In the first matchup, Pro-Am beat the Sigmas to secure their place in the final. In the second matchup, the Skins beat Coach Diego to secure their place in the final. These two teams played the morning of the pep rally with Pro-Am beating the Skins to go to the pep rally. At the pep rally, Pro-Am defeated the teacher team in an exciting matchup. This tournament was a great experience for students in the exercise science/officiating class to officiate basketball for the first time.
The next sport that these students will learn is volleyball. Similarly to the basketball tournament, Mrs. Hamilton and her students will put on a volleyball tournament to get students to experience officiating in that sport as well.
