The Woodford County boys basketball team has made big improvements over the past few years, including a very exciting state tournament run in the 2022-23 season. In the following season, the boys basketball team fell short of returning to state, losing in regionals, disappointed with how the season ended.
With the 2024-25 season now fully underway, and district tournament play beginning soon, Woodford is ranked as the #21 team in the entire state. They have had one of, if not the toughest first half season schedules in the state, playing lots of top 25 teams and a handful of top 10 teams. Woodford has had some promising wins over Bowling Green, Ashland, GRC, Ballard, and they just barely lost to the #1 team in the state, St. X. They have also had a few games that were lost that were definitely winnable such as Spencer County, Collins, Anderson, Green County, South Laurel, and Bryan Station. Three of these losses are within the district, which is slightly concerning, but Woodford has not played anywhere near their best in these games.
Woodford County has been led by Western Kentucky commit, senior Armelo Boone, who transferred from Fredrick Douglas over to Woodford in the offseason. Woodford also has multiple other weapons on this team that can help to make this team dangerous. Woodford also has more seniors this year than the year before making this team more experienced and able to handle the big stages in tournament play.
The goal for this team since the very beginning of this season was to make it back to Rupp Arena for the state tournament, and that has not changed since. I fully believe that this goal is achievable as Woodford was also picked to win their region before the season started, meaning that we would represent the region in the state tournament. I predict that Woodford will win their district and region, meaning that Woodford County will return to the state tournament for the 2nd time in three years.
