Freshman year, I was asked to read a book for my English class. At the end of this book’s unit in the class, my teacher revealed that her lifelong best friend wrote the very book we were assigned in class. Prior to the unit test we took, she brought in her best friend and let us ask whatever questions we wanted about the writing process and how she had the idea to write this very interesting book.
The author, Sarah Combs has written and published two books so far. Both of her novels have one thing in common, she enjoys writing about teenage relations. Breakfast Served Anytime was her first novel published which paved the way for her success with her second.
The book follows the story of Gloria, a high school senior who spends her summer at a camp for gifted students. Set in Kentucky, the camp, known as “Geek Camp”, offers Gloria and her peers a chance to explore their intellectual passions. Throughout the summer, Gloria navigates friendships and the complexities of growing up. She forms a close bond with her quirky roommates and finds herself drawn to a mysterious boy named Mason. The novel captures the essence of a transformative summer, filled with personal growth and the nature of leaving childhood behind.
The novel is especially meaningful to me now that I am also a senior and can better relate to Gloria and her experiences throughout the book. Additionally, the author illustrates Kentucky in a very beautiful and intense way. It focuses on building relationships with the people you love and the struggles of friendship.
Although this book required educational reading, I enjoyed it immensely and would recommend it to anyone, and while I do not read extremely often, I would absolutely read this book again. It showed true and genuine relationships. It was extremely well written and had many unexpected twists in the plot.
