Hunger games
By: Suzanne Collins
Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is one of my favorite reads and today I will summarize the novel. Hunger Games is classified as a dystopian style. The book is about a government that has broken its people into districts and long before the time period of the book, the districts rebelled. The government’s way of asserting control is the hunger games; in which names are put in from ages 12-18 and each district has a boy and girl selected. Each district will fight for their life in hunger games, in which they must kill each other and survive attacks in the dome they are put in. The main character of the book is Katniss Everdeen, who lives in District 12, one day when her sister turns twelve and they select the names her sister gets chosen so Katniss, says the iconic line ‘’ I volunteer as tribute,’’ Here she replaces her sister in the games, alongside a boy named Peeta, the two are trained and put into the dome to fight for their life.
The book has themes of rebellion, that are demonstrated by Katiss and her actions in the games. Rebellion can even be found in the stories of the past within the book, for instance, how long before the districts rebelled and now so they have to do the hunger games. Katniss can be known throughout the book as fearless, and rebellious, there are many places in the book where this can be proven. Katniss is stubborn and hard-working overall, which leads to her sense of rule-breaking and rebellion, she even inspires many in the district and gains much respect.
Within Hunger Games the idea of love is also present, you can even find a love triangle between Katniss and two characters. In the book, it shows the development of the love between the characters. Later in the book this love could even cause rebellion, not only is it a relationship love but also between friends along the way. Along with love, it shows the love of teenagers, since most of the characters are teens. Along with the topics of love and teenage life, there is friendship. This book has many sad moments. In this book, Katniss made a beautiful friendship with someone in the Hunger Games younger than her
Katniss as you go through can be seen as someone who really cares for her family. This demonstrates the importance of family in difficult times. This is even present when she risks her own life to go in the Hunger Games so her sister does not have to. As you read more you will learn about the death of her father when she was younger and how she takes care of her family. The presence of love and affection for family is very present in the book, which makes it really good.
To conclude, this book shows that it is okay to outsmart a system that is wrong. Overall Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a great book, known for its dystopian style. It presents ideas of love, friendship, family, and rebellion. With all of these elements combined it makes a very emotional book, that allows you to feel what Katniss feels, and you can feel as though the story is real and feel all of the feelings with that. Overall if you have not read Hunger Games, it’s a must-read, for all readers.
