Entering the 5A State playoffs, the Jackets are 9-1 with one loss coming in week 6 to South Oldham. Woodford County has been on a roll and is arguably a top-10 team in Kentucky. Led by quarterback Justus Wertzler who has put up 28 touchdowns to only 6 interceptions, they are looking to win a state championship with this powerful offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Outside linebacker and edge rusher, Davion Sturgis leads 5A with a total of 15 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. There are only a few teams in the state with players as impactful as these on Woodford County.
After a great regular season, Woodford County entered into round one of the playoffs vs Dixie Heights, a team out of northern Kentucky, with a chip on Woodford County’s shoulder. In last season’s first-round match-up, Dixie Heights brutally beat the Yellow Jackets 60-14. However, that was the opposite of what happened this season. Woodford County came out strong and controlled all 4 quarters of the entire game. Destroying the Colonels 49-14. However, this is just the easy part of the playoffs.
Going into round two of the playoffs this Friday, November 15th, 7:31 pm. At the Woodford County Community Stadium, The Yellow Jackets take on a historic and top 12 football, Highlands. Highlands has had many well-known and prosperous football players in the past. With names such as Jared “Hefty Lefty” Lorenzen and Marty Moore. Highlands looks to come in and embarrass Woodford County believing they are the better team. However, that just won’t be the case.
Woodford County needs all the support it can gain this week. If you are in the Central Kentucky and Woodford County area and more importantly attend Woodford County you need to be there. This is a must-watch game and will be one for the books. Both pass-heavy offenses that have a suitable run game will be an electric atmosphere. Come support the yellow jackets tomorrow night, 7:31 pm at the community stadium. Let’s go!
