Woodford County High School’s 2024 Homecoming was last Friday, and it was an overall success. The reviews were mostly positive and everyone had different opinions on the music, snacks, and dates. There was something to offer for everyone. After sending out a survey to the student body, we got many responses. Homecoming had lots to offer; an area to grab water and snacks if needed, places to take pictures, and two areas to hang out outside when needing some air.
Starting with the DJ and music played, students have requested that next year we have more slow dance songs and less over-the-top rap songs playing. Only one slow dance song was played the whole time, Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapelton. For most people, including myself, this was not enough. People who don’t enjoy rap and are there with their date become bored. There needs to be more variety in the music played, not just rap and RnB. Students were highly disappointed about this and it caused lots of mixed reviews regarding the overall quality of the night.
The homecoming dance was not the sole activity the students enjoyed. They enjoyed all of the festivities surrounding homecoming such as spirit week, the pep rally, the football game, and most importantly, getting ready and seeing friends. Student interaction is very important and homecoming is a great way to meet with people you may not have connected with before. People loved homecoming for the friendship and connection it brought.
The snack bar had overwhelmingly positive reviews. From water to Gatorade and soft drinks, all free of cost, people were able to hydrate when on the dance floor. The snacks were also very good, with cookies being the most popular choice. The snacks will be back next year!
The theme of homecoming was dancing under the stars, however, the students did not like the decor. Lots of students commented on how they still felt as if they were in a cafeteria, which was not a positive response. That feeling of being in a room that kids eat in every day was not enjoyable. People want to feel as if they are really under the stars and to be immersed in the theme.
Overall the homecoming experience was good but some things need to be changed. With the new high school coming to town, there are many new things we as a school can do for prom and next year’s homecoming. New opportunities, new challenges, and a whole student body to have the best homecoming in the state of Kentucky.
