On August 23rd, 2024, Jasmine Hager, a student here at WCHS, created a dance group to not only do what she loves but to also create a gateway for other students to explore new interests. Jasmine asked Nevaeh Marston and me to be a part of the creation of this group, so with the three of us being the first members, we all agreed to name it “Lunoia.” It is a name that combines two words with powerful definitions to better help those understand what this group is about and what it brings to the table. The first word is ‘ludic’, which means full of fun and high spirits. The second word is ‘eunoia’, which means beautiful thinking; and a healthy mind. So far, we have 7 additional members.
What do we do?
What is the purpose of this dance group? Well, for those who wish to dance- it is an open space to allow that opportunity. We learn about different cultures and styles within dance. However, dancing isn’t the only thing those who join the group can help with and enjoy. Members can also use their talents to practice their interests here. Some might just enjoy watching and helping point out mistakes that they notice, while others help with the cinematography aspect, and some help with makeup, outfits, and future dance suggestions.
When do we meet?
Our practices usually begin right after school ends, from 3:30 to 5:15. We meet in any classroom that has open space and a teacher willing to help. Currently, we are using the choir room for most of our practices. We start with stretching while the song we are learning is playing and then we do one full run of what we have learned at normal speed. After that, we go to .25x once, .50x twice, .75x three times, and then normal speed five times. When learning a new part of the choreography, we practice the same process except we do every different speed five times. Once we know the new part of the choreography, we piece it together with what we have learned and continue the same process until all of it is complete.
What are we currently working on?
What is the plan to get this team started in the right direction? What do we hope for as a group? As of right now, we are working on Crazy by Le Sserafim. It has taken us a few weeks to learn the whole choreography and there are still plenty of little details we need to work on to perfect the set, but everyone is looking out for each other and giving constructive feedback to improve. To lead our team in the right direction, we are starting to post member introductions on the Instagram page and work on editing the footage we have of practice runs so we can give small teasers and an insight into our performance. We are also advertising around the school and in other areas around Versailles. We hope to gather attention and gain new members as we go so that in the future, we can create larger sets with more members and allow those who want to try something new a chance.
