Starting with your monthly school-wide scoop, the WCHS boy’s soccer team worked their way through the regional bracket and made it to the state quarterfinal. Despite their loss in the quarterfinal, a top-eight finish is the farthest our boys’ soccer team has ever gone. Congrats Jackets! Our football team also pulled off a massive win over Collins on October 11th. Homecoming spirit week didn’t end quite like we wanted, but nonetheless, it was a fun week filled with activities including the homecoming parade, the Powderpuff game, and of course the dance. By the end of the week, the juniors earned the most points, with the senior class coming in second, followed by sophomores, and then freshmen coming in last. In pop culture news, the music industry suffered a devastating loss when ex-member of the boy band One Direction, Liam Payne, unexpectedly died Wednesday, October 16th of suspected suicide. He was found dead after falling from a balcony at a Brazilian hotel. There is no evidence of foul play, however, an autopsy found multiple drugs in his system at the time of death.
You may have heard about Amendment 2 by now, as it’s been a circulating issue in the Kentucky Congress for over a month now. Amendment 2 is a change to the Kentucky Constitution that would impose taxes on the general population to fund individuals to attend private schools. Eligible voters will have the opportunity to vote for or against Amendment 2 on their ballot this November.
With mere weeks until election day, candidates are making their closing arguments, hosting their final rallies, and taking their last interviews of the 2024 election. Kamala Harris is making an extra effort to appeal to Gen Z voters in these final weeks. Especially in battleground states. Harris is pushing her campaign with block parties and tailgates on college campuses and ads targeted at college students. Trump hosts rallies in battleground states as well, including one in Madison Square Garden which is currently under scrutiny from Trump’s fellow republicans because of controversial comments made by his guests. Comedian Tony Hinchliffe received the most backlash when he called Puerto Rico a “floating pile of garbage”, and several congressmen from Florida met him with criticisms regarding his comment. U.S. congresswoman Maria Elvira said it was a “racist comment” and she was “disgusted.”
On a lighter note, baseball fans were on the edge of their seats as the World Series concluded with a massive comeback for the Dodgers. The final score was 7-6 with the winning run by Walker Buehler.
