There is a new trend spreading like wildfire these days. It has grabbed the attention of many students and staff at WCHS. The trend in question is Owala water bottles. Specifically, one Owala design called a free sip water bottle. If you don’t know what they are, trust me you’re not alone, but soon you won’t go a day without hearing about someone’s Owala collection. It seems like the last trend just happened with Stanley Tumblers. Everyone wanted one. Well, bad news for the Stanley brand but the new trend is these Owalas. People are watching the websites and waiting for the next one to come out like they are collectibles. You can even see as you’re walking through the hallways just how many people have these Owala cups in their backpack pockets or hands.
There are many reasons why these new water bottles have replaced the trend surrounding Stanley cups. For one thing, they are much more functional. Stanley cups would spill a lot of their contents out onto a desk or floor when they were knocked over whereas Owalas are practically leakproof. They are also rumored to be much easier to drink out of because they have an option for both a straw or a free drinking design. Another big draw to the Owala brand is the various designs that include seasonal options. People even wait for the new designs to drop. For example, many people were ecstatically waiting for the design Boo-Ya to release because it is a Halloween-themed water bottle with a glow-in-the-dark design with ghosts on it. Then, there is another soon-to-be-released Halloween design called Werewolf that comes out on October 15.
Though it may be just another passing phase at least this one is sensible, unlike many others that have come and gone. This trend gives people functional reasons to be excited to drink water. These bottles can also act as a common ground and conversation starter between students even if it is in the middle of class.
