Coming off of a 6-4 2023-2024 campaign, Coach Dennis Johnson and the Woodford County Yellow Jackets are fired up. With athletes such as Leland Taylor, Wyatt Crowe, Davion Sturgis, Makhi Smith, Graham Hodge, and Justus Wertzler returning for a senior year, the Yellow Jackets believe this is their year.
The difference between this team and the last is the connection. With a bunch of returning players, the team chemistry is on another level this year, leading to a team that will know how to work together and be a cohesive unit. They believe this can lead them to a deep playoff run and state championship.
Leland Taylor states about the upcoming season, “An undefeated regular season and deep playoff run is to come.” The Yellow Jackets have started 3-0 vs teams such as Taylor County High School, Dunbar High School, and Atherton High School. With a combined score of 138-20.
The Woodford County football team will be traveling to Downey, California this week to take on Warren High School. This is a fantastic opportunity to play tough, out-of-state competition, and establish themselves as a powerhouse of Kentucky.
Davion Sturgis, a senior outside linebacker is hyped up about the upcoming game. Davion states, “I am probably most excited for the Cali trip. It will be fun getting to spend time with teammates, having fun and hopefully getting the win.”
People are expecting to see a new Woodford County team this year. With new offensive coordinator and former player George Bowen coming to town, the offense is new and improved. While switching from the option to the spread serves to be a challenge, the Yellow Jackets seem to have mastered it. Athlete Wyatt Crowe says, “People will see a really good offense that is high-powered with a lot of points scored. Something a lot different than last season.” This season you are to expect a new and improved team.
