On February 15th, 2024, The Sports Literacy class, taught by Ms. Kifer, went to Simmons Elementary to read to the second-grade class. Several students from each class block took time to educate the younger students about Black History Month by reading books about Michael Jordan and Wilma Rudolph aloud.
The first group consisted of Clark Kissick, Landon Sears, and DJ Dumas. They read “Little People Big Dreams: Michael Jordan” By Mariah Isabel Sanchez Vegara. Throughout the book, the presenters would read some and then follow up with a comprehension question for the students. The presenters rewarded them with candy as encouragement if they got the question correct.
The second group consisted of Ian Sergent, Dayonna Clark, and Christian Burks. This group of presenters followed the same format but read “The Quickest Kid in Clarksville,” written by Pat Zietlow Miller and illustrated by Frank Morrison.
After reading, the students were prompted to draw a scene from the book. They chose a variety of parts, each one portraying what they thought was funniest or most interesting.
Seeing the faces of each student light up when they answered a question correctly or when they reacted to a silly part of the book made this entire experience worthwhile. The students in Ms. Kifer’s class greatly impacted these children by showing them their undivided attention and being genuinely invested in their answers and artwork. I hope future Digital Literacy Students continue this each year.
