When thinking of the greatest coaches of all time, names like Urban Meyer, Joe Paterno, and Bear Byrant may come to mind, but there is one name that people usually remember. With 7 national championships (one with LSU, 6 with Alabama), 292–71–1 head-coaching record (Toledo, LSU, and Alamaba), 2 undefeated seasons in 2009 and 2020, and 50 total years of coaching; Nick Saban has one of the best college coaching resumes ever.
After dominating the SEC for the whole 2000s and having 11 SEC championships, Alabama has become a powerhouse for college football. Saban has produced 123 NFL players in his 17-year Tuscaloosa run, and 44 of those were first-rounders. All of these draft picks have accumulated a whopping $2.6 BILLION in revenue, meaning these players were impactful for their pro teams as well.
Although he has been a super successful coach, Nick Saban’s retirement didn’t come as huge a surprise as people may think. With Georgia’s recent success and Alabama’s not winning a championship since 2020 (a rather large streak for Saban), the Alabama dynasty was coming to an end. Most of Alabama’s National Championships came around the 2010s, with the first one in 2009, spanning to 2020.
