Saturday the 18th kicked off a new tradition in Woodford County, a 2 mile “turkey trot” at Huntertown Community Interpretive Park. All proceeds from the race will go to the support of future projects within the park, like a pavilion hoped to be built next spring.
Although it follows the Thanksgiving theme, “turkey trot” does not necessarily match what happened this Saturday. Turkeys are proven to be able to “trot” at a cool 25 miles per hour, which just so happens to be faster than the 23 mile per hour average speed of Usain Bolt on his fastest 100 meter sprint. Sadly, there were no Usain Bolts present at the race this Saturday, but there were some young sprinters hoping to be the one to make it out of the gate first. Like Blake Porter, an 8th grader from the middle school, who won the race with a staggering time of 12:12.
The atmosphere of the race was incredible. There were a total of 94 people signed up for the race, all there to help support and get the word out about the race.
Joe Wiley, husband of Mrs. Wiley, a science teacher at the school, was the director of this event. Joe led the event with much enthusiasm, sporting a turkey hat the majority of the time. When speaking to those on the board and even just enjoyers of the park, it seems as though there is a multitude of future projects the park will be at the epicenter of.
There were many volunteers present at the race Saturday, sacrificing their time to make sure that the event ran smoothly. Even some students, like Brayden Carter (11) and Will McKale (11) were there handing out water and marking the course.
Overall, the race was a success, bringing fun, and even some competition, to all in the community.
