The history of Woodford Country has been rarely talked about recently. You have the signs posted all over the county that tell specific bits, but it still seems like there isn’t much care of our rich history. One of the richest we have is that of Huntertown. A community started right after the Civil War, where freed enslaved people could reside safely. One of the residents of Huntertown was Fred Jackson. A World War 2 veteran who had roots in Woodford County. A miraculous story about him and his life’s history unfolded recently, with 2 Woodford students at the center.
The students, Hattie Steen and Meaghan Burke (both juniors) were volunteering for clean-up at the Huntertown Historical Park when they discovered the dog tag of Fred Jackson. This military tag had his information engraved in the metal. These students, under the direction of the head of the park project Sioux Finney, were able to return this tag to the family of Fred Jackson. The ceremony was held in the WCHS library on September 25th. The event was covered by numerous news sources along with student reporters for your very own Jacket Journal and Yearbook.
