Woodford County Public Library Celebrates National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month, and while the poetry unit isn’t everyone’s favorite, it’s important to look at certain viewpoints when it comes to the different styles of poetry.
That’s what the Woodford County Public Library did this month. Every Tuesday at 6:30-7:30 pm, there’s a writing workshop called Writer’s Group. Every month is a different “unit” themed to match the style of writing that’s being explored. This month was themed poetry because this month celebrates that writing style.
Writer’s group has a very loose structure to it. Everyone comes in and talks about their week, their writing, and anything that interests anyone else. This goes on for about 10-15 minutes, then we’re all given a few prompt ideas and 20-25 minutes to write. When everyone’s done writing, the people that want to share can, while receiving feedback from peers. Nobody has to share, but whoever wants to can, and is given the opportunity.
There are different types of prompts that we were given. There are the picture prompts, where you write a poem about any picture you want. There are color prompts, where you can write about a color or a feeling that a color gives you, with the help of palette generators. Nobody is obligated to complete the prompts, it’s just something to help boost your creativity.
This month has been really productive with its prompts and poetry discussions. There have been a lot of teenagers coming to the library, reading books, writing, and having fun doing so. This program has been busy showing kids and adults that you can learn without it feeling like a chore.
