Rating Popular Christmas Songs

This is a line-up of 10 popular Christmas song, ranked in order. I give my rating and then a RYM rating (an online website to rate music). I also share my thought’s about each song.

A Holly Jolly Christmas

Rating: 4.8/5

RYM: 3.5/5

This song was first sang by Burl Ives in 1965 and is the most popular version of the song. This brings a warm feeling to the listener. It feels like it is snowing outside and while you’re wrapped up in a blanket drinking hot chocolate. It makes Christmas feel as happy as it did when I was seven. I personally like Burl Ives’s deep voice, and the “Ding Dong Ding” from a choir in the background.

Let it Snow

Rating: 4.8/5

RYM: 3.2/5

The Dean Martin version of this song was sang in 1959 in his “a Winter Romance” album. The song makes you want it to snow, obviously. It sounds romantic and warm, even if it’s going to snow. This is a classic, and it used to play on an ornament I had. I don’t have anything I dislike about this song.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Rating: 4.3/5

RYM: 3.15/5

The version from Andy Williams was released in 2007. This song is more uplifting and upbeat compared to the warmer Christmas songs. It makes you get up and show your Christmas spirit. This song is also great because it’s a part of LeBron’s sprite cranberry commercial. I like the gradual increase of pitch throughout the song. It has an iconic intro and voice.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Rating: 4.0/5

RYM: 3/5

The version from Frank Sinatra came out in 1948 and personally sounds the most nostalgic. The song is suspenseful and used to actually make me go to bed and act right. When Santa was a real thing to me, this song was really important, and that’s why it’s high on the list. I like how after different lines in comes back to, Santa Claus is coming to town.

Jingle Bell Rock

Rating: 4.0/5

RYM: 3.3/5

Bobby Helms, released this song in 1957. It has girl back up singers and Helms’s oldy sounding voice up front. It brings something of fun to the regular jingle bells. My favorite part is the guitar riff at the beginning. This is a classic Christmas song, how could you not like it.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Rating: 4.0/5

RYM: 3.5/5

This song from Brenda Lee, released in 1958 is energetic and uplifting. It has strong female vocals that carry the song. I really like how there are parts where it explains a fun Christmas day and kind of paints a picture. The ending will always be a good one.

Winter Wonderland

Rating: 3.8/5

RYM: 3.0/5

The popular version from Bing Crosby was released in 1962. Rather than energetic, this song is warm and jazzy. It feels like you are in a winter wonderland just by listening to the song. I really like the intro with the muted trumpets. Also, how it talks about a blue bird throughout is fun.

Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer

Rating: 3.8/5

RYM: 3.4/5

The version I find the most memorable is from Gene Autry, released in 1961. The sound of the song is very acoustic and has different musical sound that replicate reindeer hooves. The song is very catchy and rhythmic. I don’t think I will ever forget the words.

Frosty the Snowman

Rating: 3.8/5

RYM: 3.1/5

This version from Bing Crosby came out in 1962 in his “Christmas Classics” Album. The song tells a story about a magical snowman, and outlines the movie most of us watched as a kid. The song is kinda sad, and pretty much talks about him melting. I like the musical intro. This song just got a little boring for me, but it’s still pretty good.

All I Want for Christmas is You

Rating: 0/5

RYM: 3.2/5

This song from Mariah Carey came out in 1994. This song is utter trash. She’s annoying and tries way too hard. I hope she gets no one for Christmas. This song is torture since all the unnecessary runs in her voice are present in the song. Like just take a chill pill, Mariah.
