The Song’s History

On August 24th, Taylor Swift came out of the shadows and dropped a song that made heads turn. “Look What You Made Me Do” broke records, being the most viewed video in 24 hours, beating Adele’s “Hello” and PSY’s “Gentleman” with 43.2 million views on YouTube. The video was watched on average at 300,000 views per minute and 3 million views per hour in the first 24 hours of the release. Everyone was shocked from what they saw in the video, from Taylor crawling out of a grave to sitting in a bathtub full of diamonds. Even though this might sound eccentric, there are some explanation to all of her bizarre behavior.

Taylor Swift has had her fair share of arguments, scandals, and ex-boyfriends that she has both cried about and written hit songs about. In “Look What You Made Me Do,” she targets Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Tom Hiddleston, Calvin Harris, Katy Perry, and David Mueller.

Music Video Decoded

In the beginning of her song, she is shown crawling out of a grave that reads “Here Lies Taylor Swift’s Reputation” as she rises. While she is walking, you can see that she is wearing the same dress from the video, “Out of the Woods” showing that the old, 1989 Taylor Swift, is gone. She is shown burying herself, back in 2015 at the Met Gala. She is lying in a grave, and that is her first sign that she is forgetting the lovable, red-lipped Taylor Swift. While she was burying herself, it showed on a gravestone next to her saying “Nils Sjoberg” was her pseudonym for her ex’s, Calvin Harris song, “This Is What You Came For.”

The scene flashes to her in a bath tub full of diamonds, 10 million dollars worth of diamonds to be exact. Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West have had a past of arguing. It all started when Taylor relieved an MTV award for women’s best video, and as she got on the stage, she started speaking as Kanye West ran up on stage, grabbed the microphone, and said “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!”  It has been rocky every since Kanye made “Famous” and included Swift in the song without her consent. Kim Kardashian was in Paris when she was tied up in a bathtub and was robbed in October of last year. The scene with Taylor In a bath tub is supposed to be a stab at Kim being robbed in Paris.

On the left side of the bath tub, are some necklaces, and one looks like the locket that Calvin Harris got Taylor while they were dating. The necklace is in an odd shape, and it looks like they used the locket to spell out “No.”

When it is shown with her on a throne, there is a carving in the chair that says “Et tu, Brute,” which means, “You too, Brutus?” This is from Julius Caesar when he was attacked and stabbed by his own people, including his best friend, Brutus. It is used to show betrayal and being stabbed in the back.

The scene quickly switches over to a car crash and Taylor Swift dressed a lot like Katy Perry. They have had history with backup dancers, with Katy Perry “taking the dancers from Taylor” and Taylor still holds the grudge even though Katy wants to put a pin in it. Taylor Swift is shown in the crash, dressed like Katy. Taylor is shown holding a Grammy, what Katy is famous for not winning.

Taylor is also shown robbing large amounts of money from a company. As she walks out, it says “Stream Co.” This is from when back in 2013 she took all of her songs off of all streaming companies.

When Taylor busts into the room with some men, she dances, then she snaps, and the men rip their shirts open to reveal a shirt that said ‘I love TS.’ Her ex, Tom Hiddleston, wore this shirt on vacation. When she snaps and they show the shirts, it is showing that she brainwashed him and had full control.

Taylor had her dramatic moment, above all of her other “Taylors” that have been shown over the years. She wants to forget the cute “girl next door” look and turn herself around. She wants to show that she is tough and wants to forget her past.

As you can see, Taylor Swift is here to prove herself. She is telling people that she doesn’t want to be doubted, and if I’m being honest, I love her like this.
