What Adults Can Learn From Our Generation

Are students able to educate adults as much as adults educate us?

The roles of student and teacher are reversed.

You hear the phrase “respect and learn from your elders” all the time but as the world is changing, and many ideas can be learned from our generation as well. We live in a place that is constantly exploding with frightening news and rapid changes in our generation may hold adults back from knowing everything they possibly can while they work their nine to five jobs and maintain a family. Ideas like acceptance or open-mindedness, technology, and being more involved are a significant part of our generation and I believe that the younger generation can teach some of these changing ideas to the older generations.

Acceptance/Open-Mindedness

The people of our generation have sprung up on being free and advocating for what they believe in. These past years have been filled with protests fighting for more rights for climate change, women, LGBTQ+, and more. Adults who are not caught up with today’s news may find that what we do is out of the ordinary. But as a part of the youth, it’s vital to urge the importance of how big of a difference it can make if adults take the time to be open to learning about new subjects that are important to the younger generations.

Technology

Phones, tablets, and laptops are a must in our everyday lives. We use them in school for learning and at home for entertainment. It seems that there is no way around these devices. New gadgets are invented and released each year, which doesn’t give a lot of time for adults to adjust to what they currently have. However, almost every child has grown up with some screen in front of them. But is there or should there be a line drawn on how much time we spend on our phones or Chromebooks?

Being Involved

As we grow from being children to young adults, there are many changes that we go through. Through this process, there is an immense amount of stress, emotions, and impulses. Children appreciate when a parent or adult takes time out of their lives to check on us. Being there for us is so important whether it is by giving advice, saying “I love you,” or even just a simple hug. While providing affection is necessary, there are times where children need their privacy. We don’t want parents who control every single action we take. Letting us be mature and take responsibility is one of the best things an adult can do.
